Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a preoperative PCA education to that of teaching provided by nurse.

Method :The research design was a one group pre and post -test design with 23 patients with hospitalized for orthopedic surgery. Data were collected two times , before and after the education program of PCA. Outcome was estimated knowledge, anxiety and attitude about use of PCA.

Results : Wilcoxon signed rank test revealed significant differences before and after knowledge(p=.006) and anxiety(p=.000) about use of PCA. There was no significant differences on attitude(p=.761) about use of PCA.

Conclusion : The finding provide preoperative PCA education can increase knowledge and decrease anxiety for the use of patient¡¯s PCA therapy.
